Water availability

Water availability is the plain physical input that fabs need to run and that many data centers rely on for cooling. It matters because two different layers of the chain — chip output at the fab and site selection for data centers — both quietly inherit water risk. The twist is that the constraint usually arrives through politics before hydrology: drought cycles in Taiwan and the US Southwest keep recurring in exactly the regions where fabs and data centers are most concentrated, and permits and restrictions bite before the taps actually run dry.

If water tightens, drought rules can curtail fab utilization or freeze new data-center permits in the affected basins, and cooling design starts trading water against power. The most exposed name is TSMC, whose fabs sit in a drought-prone island; the counterweights are the water-treatment specialists that help stretch supply, Kurita and Organo, and land-and-water holders like Texas Pacific Land.
