What it means
The fabric is the high-speed network that ties thousands of accelerators together into one cluster so they can train or serve a model as a single system. In a large AI build, the fabric is not an afterthought — it is a major share of the cost and a frequent performance bottleneck, because chips spend much of their time waiting to exchange data with one another. The fabric is built from switch silicon, interconnect chips, electrical and optical cabling, and the transceivers that convert signals to light for longer runs. As clusters scale, the fabric scales with them.
Why it matters to investors
When chips spend their time waiting on each other, the fabric becomes the binding constraint and a growing line item. That puts switch-silicon, interconnect and optics suppliers squarely in the path of AI spending — a part of the chain whose importance rises with cluster size.
