FuelCell Energy builds stationary power plants that generate electricity from natural gas electrochemically — carbonate and solid-oxide fuel cells — rather than by burning it. Historically an industrial and utility supplier, it is pivoting toward data centres that want power generated on site, behind the meter, so they can sidestep the wait for a grid connection. Recent agreements with Fit Energy and a collaboration with SDCL both target multi-megawatt on-site deployments.

The structural hook is the same interconnection bottleneck that dogs the whole power layer: when the grid is the constraint, continuous baseload generated next to the load becomes valuable. Fuel cells offer that steady, low-emission output without combustion. But this is an emerging position built on early agreements, not delivered capacity — the model keeps its weight low, marking it as an unproven behind-the-meter supplier at the edge of the build-out rather than a settled part of it.
