SerDes

SerDes is the tiny circuit that serialises data to fire it down a single wire or fibre at very high speed, then reassembles it at the other end. It is the per-lane primitive that everything above it is built from — switches, optical modules and the fabrics lashing clusters together are all, at bottom, arrays of these lanes. Each jump in SerDes speed quietly rewrites the rules one layer up: how far copper can still carry a signal, and the point at which a link must switch to optics instead.

When SerDes hits a wall, it shows up as signal-integrity limits that stall higher port speeds — the whole system's bandwidth roadmap waits on this primitive. The structural point is that the smallest building block paces the layers above it. Exposure runs through the connectivity specialists that license or design these lanes: Alphawave, Marvell, Credo, Astera Labs, Socionext and MACOM, whose leverage grows as each speed transition makes the primitive harder to get right.
