Sumitomo Chemical is a sprawling Japanese chemical group whose relevance to AI sits in one specialised corner: its electronics-materials arm makes photoresists and the high-purity process chemicals a fab consumes every time it patterns a wafer. That places it far upstream of the finished accelerator — before the silicon even exists, at the level of the consumable chemistry a leading-edge line cannot run without.

Its structural hook is qualification lock-in. Resists and ultra-pure chemicals have to be certified into each process node, a slow and exacting exercise, and the pool of suppliers trusted at the leading edge is small and largely Japanese. That gives incumbents sticky positions once designed in. The model keeps its weight modest because this is a single input among many, sitting inside a diversified parent whose fortunes are mostly tied elsewhere — but the underlying franchise is a genuine chokepoint consumable.
